| The chemicals used
to kill weeds in turf are called herbicides. |
|
Herbicides are catagorized - as either preemergent or postemergent. there are selective and non seletive
herbiceds a non selective
herbicide like roundup kills virtually everything green. A selective herbicide is one that kills specific weeds. |
- Postemergent herbicides
control existing weeds ones that have allready rooted.
-
Preemergent herbicides control weeds before they germinate
from seed by sterilizing the soil so the seed cant grow. So premergents are put down to stop them before they
start and postemergent is put down to kill them after they are allready growing.
|
|
So weeds that have allready rooted
but are dorment canot be killed with premergents because they allready exist even though the leaves or
blades may look
dead. Postemergent herbicides cannot stop seeds from germinating they only kill what is allready
developed or green. |
Weeds are categorized as - broadleaf or grassy weeds.
- Grassy weeds are weeds that look like grass with blade
type or needle like leaves.
