Lawn Fertilizer

To have a beutiful lawn you need to do more than just mow it you need to feed it, this page discusses fertilizers including the types, when to fertilize and how much to use.

What is fertilizer
Fertilzer is chemicals given to plants to promote and encourage growth.

Fertilizer types
There are many types of fertilizers on the market, to keep things simple we will break it down into two basic catagories organic and synthetic or chemical.
Synthetic fertilizers - These are man made fertilizers
they come in 2 types
  • Soluble synthetic - chemical
  • slow release synthetic - dry ,granual
Slow release include
  • sulfer coated urea
  • Ureaformaldehyde
Organic fertilizers -These are natural fertilizers
  • Manure
  • Blood meal or chicken meal
  • Poultrey waste

Fertilizer Elements
All bags of fertilizer come with a label listing the analysis of the fertilizer in the bag.
Major Plant Nutrients
The 3 large numbers are the major plant nutrients they represent the percentage of nitrogen,phoshorus and potassium. Example 21-5-7 would mean that there is 21% nitrogen,5%phosphorus and 7% potassium in each bag.
Secondary Plant nutrients
Below the 3 large numbers is usually listed the secondary nutrients ,usually this will be Sulfur %, Iron % and Chlorine %.

How much and when to apply
How much you apply an when to apply depends on the type of grass you have and where you live. In general warm season grass should be fertilized in early spring,summer and early fall, cool season grass such as fescue is similar but should be fertilized less often during the summer or hot months and more during moderate tempature months. Refer to the charts below for when to apply and how much based on turf type.

Equipment used to apply
Fertilizers are applied using sprayers and spreaders. Fertilizers come in 2 forms soluble (liquid) and non-soluble (dry,granual), you use a liquid sprayer for soluble and a rotary or drop spreader for non-soluble.
Sprayers for liquid fertilizers -Liquid sprayers include hose mount, dropplet and high pressure.
Spreaders for soluble fertilizers -Spreaders include drop spreaders and rotary spreaders
